HAREWOOD HILL 2021-23 – a slight transformation.
The rear quarters of a Georgian villa becomes a mews-like house and garden?
The living room was originally the boiler room. The rest of the ground floor coal and storage areas.
The first floor main bedroom was a fifth bedroom; the rest of the upstairs (round window to round window) was the ‘billiards room’. Front door and garage door – F&B Castle Grey
The steps up into the garden originally led to the tennis court (where two incongrous bungalows now stand ).
Here we are presenting before and after pictures from June 2021 when we purchased the house (rented for 10 years and ‘tired’.
THE FACADE.
INITIAL DESIGNS FOR HOUSE AND GARDEN
MAIN LIVING ROOM: walls – Farrow & Ball Smoke Green; ceiling lights – Industville. Standard lamps – Habitat. The floors to the living room, hall and snug were all tiled in the first weeks while we ripped up carpets upstairs to find wooden floor too damaged to strip and paint – these were laminated.
KITCHEN: Units re-sprayed by Altru-Page (rather than re-built) F&B Hague Blue, as is the end wall. Antique storage units are stripped pine. Bosch hob & oven. Glass fronts replaced by heavy wooden shelves matching worktops.
SNUG: Old dining room, an awkward L-shaped room. Walls F&B Incarnadine (red) and India yellow.
We ourselves built dado rail and door frame (to cover the unsightly wiring over door). Dado – India yellow. Book case Little Green Windmill Green and Stock (off-white). Ceiling lights – Industville. Standard lamp – Habitat. Double bed-settee – Made to Last (to serve as emergency fourth bedroom).
I designed it in Photoshop to test colours, then we completed the whole task with furniture in situ (but moved around) from 4-10 January this year , including putting all LPs, CDs and books back. Not bad for retirees!
MAIN BEDROOM: Walls – a unique F&B paint I have named ‘Duff Green’ (we ordered Inchyra blue but this ‘green’ arrived and we liked it so much we used it – sent a sample back to F&B who kindly provided a pot of Inchyra blue but never identified this colour). The bed is Normandy Rattan by French Bedrooms. The ‘curtains’ are Laura Ashley silk panels.
BATHROOM: Walls – F&B Smoke Green. Forest Green vanity unit with marble effect worktop. Shower elevated and rebuilt with Moorish Verde tiles by Porcelain Superstore.
LONG BEDROOM/STUDY: Walls – F&B California range Palm. End walls – F&B Smoke Green (continuing the green theme from bathroom round window wall).
THIRD BEDROOM: Walls – F&B Cromarty. Green units – Dunelm. Bunk beds – Habitat. Grandchildren-ready.
MAIN BEDROOM ENS-SUITE.
HALL & LANDING: Panels and dado – F&B Worsted frames. William Morris Honeysuckle wallpaper inserts. Frames designed and built by ourselves.Walls – F&B Wimborne White.
UNDERSTAIRS TOILET: Inchyra Blue walls. Brass fittings. Painting Juan Miro.
LONG VIEW – living room to snug
LONG VIEW – upstairs hall both ways
Derelict garden cleared, fenced trellised, two seating areas paved. All paving laid with no concrete to enable easy design changes and drainage. Fence panels painted – Cuprinol Sea Grass. Trellis – Omega diamond lattice.
HOUSE ENTRANCE, GARDEN & FLOWERS. All work except trellis erection carried out by ourselves. All in all, nothing was contracted out that we could do ourselves.
